Taking risks is a natural part of making progress toward any goal. It is easy for any of us to focus more on avoiding risk than on achieving the goal we have in mind.
If we focus only on completely eliminating risks we may end up missing the many rewards life has to offer. While it certainly makes sense to minimize your risks whenever possible, attempting to totally eliminate risks could be viewed as unrealistic. While ignoring potential risk isn't prudent, assessing the risk/reward ratio of any situation is simply the smart thing to do.
Think about your life and some of the moments that led to some of the greatest joy you have ever experienced. Here are a few examples:
For Men:
When you asked your girlfriend to marry you there was the risk that she would say no.
For Women:
When you said yes to your boyfriend's proposal there was a risk that things would not work out.
When you decided to go on a diet there was always the risk that you would not stick to it.
When you finally took the leap of faith and went into business for yourself there was always the risk that your business would fail.
Those are just a few of the many possible scenarios.
The key to any progress is to not let the fear of the potential risks overshadow the joy of the potential reward. After all, one of the greatest risks you can ever take is to do absolutely nothing.
“Progress always involves risk. You can't steal second base and keep your foot on first.” – Frederick Wilcox
