We've all had times when we have shared our goals or dreams with others. This is often fueled by our high level of enthusiasm at the time. Often times sharing your dreams with others can give you additional motivation to move forward. In some instances, however, there may be those who are not so enthusiastic about your aspirations. In fact, some people may just be downright negative about them.

When you do share your dreams and goals with someone try not to take an unenthusiastic or negative response negatively. What do I mean by that? What I mean is you must understand that what others feel is possible for you is filtered by their own real or perceived limitations. Please keep in mind that these limitations have absolutely nothing to do with your potential.

Though No One Can Go Back And Make A Brand New Start, Anyone Can Start From Now And Make A Brand New Ending

Sometimes when we reflect back on our lives we might reflect negatively on those things that we didn't do or the mistakes we made. Such negative reflections can cause us to look upon the inventory of our past actions with regret. We may say to ourselves, “I wish I would've done things differently” or “I should've taken more risks when I was younger”.

In reality, there is nothing that we can do about the past. Perhaps in the future when there is time travel this may become an option, but for now altering the past is far from reality.

We are fortunate though, in that we have the opportunity to do something about our future from this moment on. From this moment on we can start to create a better life by taking actions that we can look back on and be proud of. This is a universal reality for all of us, regardless of our age or where we are in life.

So what can we do to “start from now and make a brand new ending”? One way to do this is to set the tone for your day at the start of your day. When we wake up in the mornings we can ask ourselves this simple question, “how do I want to remember this day”. Something as simple as this may be all you need to start now to create the life you want.

Most People Never Run Far Enough on Their First Wind to Find out They’ve Got a Second

This quote reminds me of the beginning a of fitness program I started years ago. At that time I could barely run around a 440-yard track at my local Civic Center. If you are assuming that I was in terrible shape you would be correct.

At the end of that small 440-yard run I would be huffing and puffing as if I'd run some incredible distance. Basically, my goal was to run around the track….once. Each time I made it around the track I would stop as that is all I had set out to do. Then one day as I was running I realized that I was at the end of 440 yards and I wasn't tired. At the end of 880 yards I was winded, but decided to keep running anyway. In the end I ran 1 mile which was a lot for me at the time.

From then on I increased my distance more and more to 3 miles, 5 miles, 7 miles, 10 miles and so on. So what was my secret to increasing my distance? There was no secret. Something happened the first time I ran a distance that was beyond my comfort zone. I realized that I could go past my comfort zone and run longer distances. I learned that just because I was exhausted that didn't mean I couldn't go farther. At that point I discovered my “second wind”, “third wind”, “fourth wind”, and so on.

It is true that most people will not wander outside their comfort zone and as a result they will never know how fast, how far, how high they can go. Remember that right outside your comfort zone there is another faster, stronger, smarter, more amazing you waiting to be discovered.

The Greatest Weapon Against Stress Is Our Ability To Choose One Thought Over Another

Stress can be a tough thing to overcome. Many of us have found ourselves allowing negative thoughts to rob us of a peaceful night of sleep. After awhile, the tossing and turning and feelings of stress and negativity continue to build. The next thing you know, it seems that you just can't get back to sleep no matter how hard you try.

While the above scenario can be extremely frustrating there are ways for us to alleviate such stress. Here's a technique I have used with great success. If I find myself tossing and turning in bed from one issue or the other I make this simple declaration to myself, “If you are not going to get out of bed and do something about the issue right now then stop thinking about it.” Sometimes I have to say this to myself several times, but it defintely works.

One effective way to stop thinking about any issues that may be causing you stress is to, as Willam James said, “choose one thought over another”. Thought substitution is a powerful method for combatting stress by replacing the negative thought that may be associated with stress.

When dealing with stress thought substitution is simply a way of distracting you mind and taking it off the negative path it has taken. You can reflect upon something pleasant such as that tranquil vacation you spent at the beach or that relaxing afternoon at the art museum.

One of the most common ways to implement thought substitution is with a change of scenery. With me, for instance, my Sunday morning walks along the river never fail to sooth and relax me. Now a walk along the river may not be your cup of tea. What change of scenery or activity would help you to relax and feel more at peace? Whatever that change of scenery of activity is take some time to enjoy it.

I Haven’t Failed. I’ve Just Found 10,000 Ways That Won’t Work

We have all probably tried to solve a problem or complete a task, but given up far too easily. Sometimes our expectation level is to blame for this. From my personal experience with my own expectation level this has certainly been the case.

There are times when you may expect to get something done quickly and easily, but things don't go as planned. It may be that your 2 hour task turned into a 6 hour, 8 hour, or 10 hour task. As time progresses past your planned 2 hours you might find yourself increasingly frustrated. This is understandable and perfectly natural.

What if you changed your expectation level? Let's say rather than telling yourself, “I can't wait to get this done” you tell yourself, “I will do an exceptional job, whatever it takes”. Do you see the difference? You see, if Edison had told himself, “I can't wait to get this done” he may have never invented the light bulb.

Make a plan right now to always do an exceptional job, whatever it takes….even if you have to try 10,000 times.

A Stumbling Block to the Pessimist Is a Stepping Stone to the Optimist

Viewing something that you feel is a stumbling block as a stepping stone may at times not seen all that easy. Like any habit, learning to view things in a positive light takes practice. Here's a quick example:

A number of years ago I found myself reflecting on the number of leaves that had accumulated in my backyard. Now it was the fall of the year and the time when the leaves were falling off the trees. The interesting thing is is that I didn't have any leaf-bearing trees in my yard. Yes, you guessed it right, all the leaves in my yard came from the yards of neighbors. Now it seemed to me that if the neighbors had raked their leaves and collected them in a timely fashion they wouldn't be blowing into my yard.

Well, quite obviously, that was not empowered way of framing the situation. When I reflect back on it I can't believe that each year I allowed myself to be frustrated by what I interpreted to be my neighbors lack of consideration.

Then one day it hit me. As I was raking leaves I noticed that I was really working up quite a sweat. I decided to pick up the pace and the next thing you know I transformed raking leaves into an excellent workout.

Now when my neighbors' leaves blow into my yard I see it as a tremendous opportunity to build strength through an excellent workout. It feels great to grow stronger performing a task that I once became so frustrated about.

We all have opportunities to transform what appeared to be stumbling blocks into stepping stones. By letting the optimist in you keep your mindset positive you will drive out the pessimist in you that may be robbing you of your joy.

It Is Our Attitude at the Beginning of a Difficult Task Which, More Than Anything Else, Will Affect Its Successful Outcome

Keeping this quote in mind has helped me transform my attitude towards performing certain tasks that don't necessarily rank highly on my list of things I want to do. If I approach a task with reluctance and dred then I have lost the battle before it has begun. If, on the other hand, I reframe my approach then the task is not only easier to complete, but is often times enjoyable.

You can reframe your approach by making one simple change. Rather than saying to youself,

“I dred doing this” or “I have to do this” or “I sure wish I didn't have to do this”

say to yourself,

“I want to do this” or “I look forward to doing a great job”

Reframing our approach allows us to begin and complete tasks in a much more enjoyable and efficient fashion. The end results will often times be better as well. This makes perfect sense as we are more likely to do a better job of completing a task we enjoy rather than one we approach with reluctance. As an added bonus we are less likely to procrastinate when it comes to tasks that we don't dred.

Life’s Rewards Go to Those Who Let Their Actions Rise above Their Excuses

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that our achievements are directly linked to the decisions we make and the actions that we take based upon those decisions. It is very easy to put things off because, “the time isn't right” or any other excuse that is convenient to us.

Excuses become a problem when they become a habit. When excuses become a habit we will often times put more effort into crafting our excuses than we do into accomplishing our goals.

Solution: Stop making excuses! Look at it this way, you can make progress or you can make excuses, but you can't do both. Simply deciding your mind once and for all which you choose to be a bigger part of your life, excuses or progress.
You can start by taking one small thing that you've been putting off and doing that thing today.
